Spanish humanitarian organisation Manos Unidas was on Wednesday awarded the prestigious Prince of Asturias Concord prize for \u201chelping millions of people worldwide\u201d to improve their living conditions.<\/p>\n
The Catholic non-governmental organisation \u201cfights against under-development, illness, oppression, lack of education and hunger,\u201d the jury said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn its 50 years of history, Manos Unidas has done significant humanitarian and social work \u2026 helping millions of people worldwide to access education and health services, thus improving their living conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Manos Unidas, which translates as Hands United, has \u201csupported around 25,000 projects in more than 64 countries in Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eight Prince of Asturias prizes, each worth 50,000 euros are awarded annually in categories such as arts, scientific research, sports, letters and humanities.<\/p>\n
The Concord prize goes to persons or institutions who have made \u201can exemplary and outstanding contribution to mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence amongst men, to the struggle against injustice, poverty, disease or ignorance \u2026 or has been outstanding in protecting and preserving mankind\u2019s heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last year\u2019s Concord prize went to the city of Berlin, the \u201csymbol of Europe\u2019s reunification.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other past winners include Jerusalem\u2019s Holocaust Museum, the UN Children\u2019s Fund UNICEF and J.K. Rowling, the British author of the Harry Potter books.<\/p>\n
Named after Spain\u2019s Crown Prince Felipe, they are presented each year in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo, capital of the Asturias region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
