The artificial limb put on an African tortoise in the US did not come from a high-tech prosthetics lab. It came from a hardware store.<\/p>\n

The castor-style wheel cost about $7, said the two Washington State University veterinarians who installed it on the tortoise after amputating a damaged front leg.<\/p>\n

They say the wheel was bought off-the-shelf, as was the epoxy that attached it to the shell.<\/p>\n

The tortoise was shown to the public on Thursday, and spent his time eating grass and other plants outside the WSU veterinary hospital.<\/p>\n

Doctors Nicol Finch and Courtney Watkins say the tortoise is moving well and gaining weight.<\/p>\n

They say this is the first time they’ve put a wheel on a tortoise, although the procedure has been done elsewhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
