A dark self-portrait as a heroic figure flanked by the muses of painting and poetry has won Australia’s most lucrative portrait painting prize.<\/p>\n

Sydney artist Leslie Rice, who won the $150,000 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, said he was humbled by the win for a canvas he described as “a painting about painting, in a sense”.<\/p>\n

Co-judge Christopher Menz said the work impressed with its “witty and ironic representation” of a theme that has interested artists for centuries.<\/p>\n

He quipped that the “rich, dark” portrait – painted on a black velvet canvas – was among the hardest of the prize finalists to photograph.

The $100,000 Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize was split for the first time between four winners who each won $25,000. They were Kelsey Austin Walsh, Tobias Titz, Ashleigh Bradley and Jacqui Stockdale.<\/p>\n
