Nelson Mandela tells interviewer he never believed he would be freed

IN ONE of his last interviews before falling critically ill, Nelson Mandela told how he never actually expected to be freed from prison more than 20 years ago.

The film provides an intimate look at Mandela and was the last to be made with the anti-apartheid hero before he was admitted to hospital with a lung infection on June 8.

“I never thought I would come out (of prison). But one day they just said, ‘Mandela, you can go home’,” he tells Australian filmmaker Adrian Steirn in the documentary.

Filmed in his home shortly after his 93rd birthday, Mandela is softly spoken in the three-minute-long piece, which does show his humour during one of his final sittings for an official portrait.

“You can adjust the size of my face,” he says to one of the crew who asks if he wants any assistance.

Steirn, who was born and raised in Sydney and lives in South Africa, said showing Mandela the interviews of other famous South Africans telling of their admiration for the “father of the nation” was a “life-defining” moment.

The 21 Icons Series combines portraits and short films to tell the inspiring stories of leaders and figures like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others who shaped the country and inspired millions around the world.

“Why is it that we admire people like Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King? The answer must be that it is because they are good,” Tutu says in the film about Mandela.

Stern said the short Mandela documentary – which also goes to air on South African television on Sunday – was designed to show a special and succinct insight into the globally-revered anti-apartheid leader.

Mandela, who recently turned 95, became South Africa’s first black president after serving 27 years in prison before his release in 1990 when apartheid was abolished.

“It’s very hard to make people sit down and watch a one-hour documentary on a person. To give someone that in three minutes is something we set out to do,” Steirn said.

Mandela is still in hospital but his condition is said to be “steadily improving”.
