How many hours does Mark Zuckerberg really work at Facebook?

IF you were a billionaire only picking up an extra $1 a year for working, would you even bother?

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 29, has an estimated worth of US$25 billion.

To put that in perspective, he could buy a new hoodie every day for the 685,000 years — give or take.

That’s not taking into account the $1 a year annual salary he accepts as a Facebook employee.

Sure, our figures there might be a bit rubbery but that’s okay. Being a billionaire is all about rubbery figures. And, possibly, public displays of boofish behaviour with your mates — but maybe that’s only Australian billionaires.

You might think, with that sort of wealth, Zuck might put his feet up and cut back on the work commitments.

But apparently not.

Recently on Quora, Facebook designer Lee Byron answered the question of just how much office time Zuckerberg clocks in.

“I sit near Mark at FBHQ so I’ll speak from my experience,” the post says.

“He’s often in every morning before me and is around after dinner working as well. I would say he’s in the office roughly 9-10 hours a day, 5 days a week.

“Sometimes we have particularly exciting projects going on that have people volunteering their weekends and Mark might come by and see how things are going.

“Mark occasionally travels and isn’t in the office, but it seems like it’s more likely that his appointments come to our headquarters than vice versa.

“I should say that it’s great to have him around with regularity and that he chooses to have the same desk set up as everyone else. He takes his job very seriously not just as a businessman but as a leader; he has helped keep our company culture what it is.”

That he’s as much a slave of the office desk as the rest of us is somehow reassuring.

Here are five other things you might not know about Mark Zuckerberg.

1. Ever wondered why the Facebook logo is blue? Zuckerberg is red-green colour blind and blue is the colour he sees best.

2. Mark Zuckerberg was 22 years old when he turned down a $1 billion offer for Facebook.

3. His dog, Beast, a Hungarian sheepdog, has nearly 2 million followers on Facebook. To put that in perspective, in terms of Facebook followers, one Bill Gates equals five Beasts.

4. Zuckerberg met his now wife Priscilla Chan while they were both queuing for the loo at a college party. She later said she was attracted by the nerdy slogan he had on his beer glass.

5. When he enrolled at Harvard, he noted on his application that he could read and write French, Hebrew, Latin, and Ancient Greek. To add to his image as a lover of the classics, he was captain of his college fencing team and known to recite epic Greek poems.
